An Old Address Is A Common Discovery
Many people only look closely at the V5C when a car is ready to leave. That is when they notice an old flat, previous house, former business address or a family address still printed on the document.
Old address issues on V5C records are common with vehicles that have been parked up for a long time. The important thing is to notice the mismatch before collection and keep the final disposal trail clear.
If a relative, tenant or employee is helping, share the address note with them before the driver calls.
Separate Keeper Address From Pickup Address
Read the V5C address, then write down where the car actually sits. If the vehicle is being collected from Settle but the V5C shows a previous address, make both facts visible in your notes.
The recovery driver needs the real pickup point. Your records need to explain why that pickup point differs from the keeper record. This is especially useful when a car is stored at a workshop, rented garage, farm or relative's house.
Add a note that uses ordinary language. "V5C still shows old address, car collected from Settle garage" is clearer than leaving future readers to work it out themselves.
If the old address belongs to a previous home, do not let that distract from the collection facts. The record should show both the historic keeper address and the real place where the car left.
Tell The Collector Early
Do not wait until the driver arrives to mention paperwork differences. Give the registration, keeper details you can confirm, and the exact collection address during booking. If another person will meet the driver, make sure they know the address issue too.
This avoids a hurried handover where nobody is sure whether the paperwork belongs to the car, the keeper or an old address that has not been relevant for years.
It also helps if the collector needs directions and the postcode alone points to the wrong doorway, lane or yard entrance.
Keep The DVLA Finish Clear
GOV.UK guidance says owners should tell DVLA when a vehicle is scrapped, and warns that failing to tell DVLA can lead to a fine. It also says an end-of-use vehicle must be scrapped at an authorised treatment facility.
After collection, save any DVLA confirmation with the V5C photos and address note. The file should show the old keeper address, the actual pickup address and the date the record was finished.
Add SORN Or Tax Clues
An old V5C address often goes with an old off-road vehicle. GOV.UK describes SORN as registering a vehicle off the road, such as when it is kept in a garage, on a drive or on private land. If SORN or tax papers exist, keep them in the same folder.
Those papers may help explain why the car has been standing and why the records have not been handled recently.
If post has gone to the old address, ask whether any vehicle letters were forwarded. A missing reminder can explain why the issue was only noticed when scrapping was arranged.
Keep that explanation with the file if another family member or business partner may review it later.
Make The Final File Understandable
Your final disposal file should make sense to someone who has never seen the car. Include V5C photos, address notes, collection messages, payment evidence, DVLA confirmation and any receipt or certificate.
That is enough to turn an old-address snag into a clear record. The paperwork may not have been perfect at the start, but it can still finish neatly.
